Goldie Hawn reveals the real reason she never married Kurt Russell

Hollywood often seems full of love. However, it’s well known that many relationships in show business don’t last very long. Fortunately, that hasn’t been the case for Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn. No, they share a bond that seems unbreakable.

The two have been together for almost four decades, and the story of how it all began is beautiful. Yet they never married, and to this day, the couple has no plans to officially tie the knot. Why? Goldie Hawn has a very clear explanation.

Goldie and Kurt have been together for 41 years. They’ve both been big-screen superstars for decades and have shared a loving relationship along with deep devotion to their family.

The iconic, long-lasting couple’s commitment to each other is remarkable, and their love story over the years is even more extraordinary. Goldie and Kurt first met in 1966 while filming The Only and Only, Genuine Original Family Band. Hawn recalled the meeting in an interview with BBC Radio 4.

There are many factors to consider in celebrity relationships, and almost every week fans read about one star or another dating someone new. Of course, whether someone is a celebrity or not, seeing two people in love and maintaining a long-term relationship is always heartwarming. One couple that brings more joy than most, however, is Kurt Russell, 73, and Goldie Hawn, 78.

“I was 21 and he was 16,” Hawn said. “I thought he was adorable, but he was much too young. Then, years later, we met again, and I remembered how much I liked him when we first met. We both said we would never date another actor, so it just shows you never can tell.”

How did Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell meet?
At first, they weren’t ready to start dating. Goldie Hawn married actor Gus Trikonis in 1969, but the couple separated after four years. She was granted a divorce in June 1976 and married Bill Hudson a few weeks later—a marriage that lasted six years.

In 1983, Russell and Hawn met again while filming Swing Shift. This time, the charming and handsome Russell tried to impress her with the line: “Man, you’ve got a great figure.”

“I was severely hungover and didn’t really know Goldie beyond working with her years before,” Russell said in a 2017 interview with Conan O’Brien.

“I didn’t know what I was going to see, and she had a great body. So the first thing that came out was, ‘Man, you’ve got a great figure.’ It came out fast, and it could’ve gone wrong—but she said, ‘Why thank you.’”

At the time, Goldie had two children from her marriage to Bill Hudson. Her son Oliver was born in 1976, and her daughter Kate was born in 1979.

While filming Swing Shift, Kurt and Goldie went out together one night after work. He took her to The Playboy Club, where they spent hours talking. Later, they decided to continue the evening at a new house Hawn had bought—but she didn’t have the keys, which led to the two breaking in.

The police eventually arrived, making it quite a memorable first date. After that, nothing could separate them. More than four decades later, Goldie and Kurt are still deeply in love.

Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell – family, children
Her children, Oliver and Kate, both went on to work in film and television. Oliver is known for his role in the comedy series Rules of Engagement, while his sister became a major movie star.

Kate Hudson’s breakthrough came in Cameron Crowe’s semi-autobiographical comedy-drama Almost Famous, where she played a veteran groupie. She won a Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress and was nominated for an Academy Award.

Even with busy careers, the family remains close. Kate lives just down the street from her mother, and they often have dinner together. When Goldie turned 60, Kurt took the whole family to Tahiti for a memorable vacation.

“It’s always so much fun when we all get together. We are very, very close and see each other as often as we can,” Goldie told Now To Love.

Kate and Oliver also host a podcast, Sibling Revelry. In one episode, they recalled the moment Kurt first won their mother’s heart. Kate was about three years old, and Oliver was six.

“It wasn’t their first date, but it’s a beautiful story,” Kate said.

“We were living in Malibu, and mum said that’s when she fell in love with Kurt right away—because he came back to the house, and we were already asleep.”

“I remembered everything and why I fell in love”
Kate and Oliver were sharing a room when Kurt quietly entered and sat beside them.

“He sat next to you first, Oliver, and watched you sleep. Then he came to me—I think he watched me the longest,” Kate explained.

According to the story, he stayed a while just watching them, and that moment deeply moved Goldie.

Soon after, in 1986, Kurt and Goldie welcomed their son Wyatt Russell. Kurt also has a son, Boston Russell, born in 1980, from his previous marriage to Season Hubley.

Both have had successful acting careers and continue working in film. Interestingly, they don’t usually watch their own movies, though they made an exception for Overboard (1987), which they later watched together.

“You know how sometimes you forget why you fell in love? I remembered everything—and why I fell in love. It was really something to watch that,” Goldie told James Corden in 2017.

Despite their long relationship, they never married.

The real reason Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell never married
According to the couple, this is part of why their bond is so strong. Goldie has said that a healthy relationship doesn’t mean spending every moment together.

In a 1986 interview with Cosmopolitan, as quoted by the Associated Press, Hawn explained her views on marriage, calling it “ridiculous.”

“We’re very happy,” she said at the time, while expecting her third child.

“The child will have the name Hawn Russell. The kids are happy, and Kurt gave me a beautiful ring to symbolize our love.”

“Honestly, owning a home, splitting things down the middle—none of that really matters. You have to move beyond it. Otherwise, what are you investing in? Concepts—and concepts can be broken in an instant. That’s why I think marriage is ridiculous.”

To celebrate seven years together, Kurt gave her a ring she wore on her wedding finger, and the couple even held a small ceremony.

“Well, we had a little ceremony—but it wasn’t a marriage ceremony. No, not at all. We’re far too together for that,” Goldie said.

Later, in 2007, she told Woman’s Day: “We’ve done perfectly well without marrying. I already feel devoted, and isn’t that what marriage is supposed to do?”

Eight grandchildren
Despite not marrying, Goldie has sometimes referred to Kurt as her husband. In an interview with Oprah Winfrey, she said they had ongoing discussions about what to call each other, noting that a piece of paper doesn’t define their relationship.

“It won’t. It won’t. Kurt and I both feel that way. If you leave the door open, you won’t walk out of it. But if you close the door and make it final, that’s when problems can arise,” she said.

Over the years, the couple has built a large and loving family, welcoming eight grandchildren. On social media, they often share moments with the younger generation. Interestingly, their grandchildren call them “Gogo” and “Gogi” instead of grandma and grandpa.

In May 2017, their family celebrated as Goldie and Kurt received stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, even sharing a kiss during the ceremony.

After 41 years together—celebrated on Valentine’s Day—they continue to show love for one another every day.

“We’re very, very lucky”
Through social media, the couple often reminds fans—and each other—of their deep love. They also openly acknowledge that relationships require effort.

During the COVID-19 pandemic, they spent time in quarantine together. Goldie admitted that despite being an entertainer, the long period was challenging.

“We’re very, very lucky, and I’m incredibly grateful—but I also feel a lot of anxiety and sadness,” she said in an interview with Good Morning Britain.

The couple often spends time in the mountains with their children and grandchildren.

“When I wake up, Kurt brings me coffee, which is so sweet—it starts the day beautifully. I have my dogs in bed with me, and I cuddle with them for a while,” Goldie told Hello! Magazine.

“We have breakfast with the kids and sit around talking. Then I go for a bike ride with Kate. As difficult as this time is, I try to cherish every moment because I get to be with my family.”

Goldie Hawn & Kurt Russell “don’t agree on everything”
Even in a strong relationship, they don’t always agree. On Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Goldie shared that differences exist—but so does a strong foundation.

“We don’t agree on everything. His politics are different from mine. There are things that could divide you. But the greatest thing we have is our family,” she said.

“That’s where we thrive, where we find joy, and where we focus our energy.”

She added: “I can’t fully explain it, but he was the one for me. It wasn’t just because he was handsome—it was because he shared my devotion to putting children first.”

“The real attraction was his personality and his focus on family.”

Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell truly inspire when it comes to making a relationship last. They remain deeply in love, and we wish them all the best in the future.

Please share their beautiful story with your friends and family.
