The Sylvester Stallone Divorce That Never Was Inside 2022’s Split

When Jennifer Flavin filed for divorce from Sylvester Stallone in Palm Beach County, Florida, on 19 August 2022, it looked like the end of a 25-year marriage. The Sylvester Stallone divorce was front-page news within hours. Seven weeks later, it was over before it had properly begun.

For fans who grew up with Rocky and Rambo, the story played out like one of his films: a knockdown, a long count, and a comeback few people saw coming.

A filing that shocked Hollywood

Stallone was 76 at the time and Flavin was 54. In her petition, the former model told the court the marriage was irretrievably broken and could not be saved. She asked for sole use of the family home in Palm Beach while the case went through. She also accused her husband of wasting marital assets, a claim Stallone denied.

The actor kept his response short. Through a representative, he said: “I love my family. We are amicably and privately addressing these personal issues.”

The timing caught many off guard. Only three months earlier, in May 2022, the pair had marked their silver wedding anniversary with warm tributes on Instagram. Stallone told his wife he wished they could have another 25 years. Flavin wrote that their marriage kept getting better every year. That post was later deleted.

The tattoo and the dog

Days before the filing, fans spotted something new on Stallone’s right arm. The portrait of Flavin he had worn on his bicep for years was gone. In its place was Butkus, the bullmastiff who appeared alongside Rocky Balboa in the original 1976 film.

Butkus was no prop. He was Stallone’s own dog, and the actor has often told how, broke and struggling in New York before Rocky, he sold the animal outside a shop for a few dollars. Once his script sold, he tracked down the new owner and paid far more to get him back. The dog went on to share the screen with him. So when Butkus replaced Flavin on his arm, fans read it as a pointed choice.

His representative told the Daily Mail that Stallone had only meant to refresh the image of his wife, but the results were “unsatisfactory and, unfortunately, unfixable”. The same statement mentioned that the family was filming a reality series together for Paramount+.

Rumours soon spread that a different dog lay behind the split: a Rottweiler named Dwight, which Stallone had reportedly brought home despite his wife’s objections. Stallone denied the dog had anything to do with it.

Three daughters, one message

Before the news broke, Flavin had already hinted that something was wrong. She shared a photo of herself with the couple’s three daughters, Sophia, then 25, Sistine, 24, and Scarlet, 20, with a caption calling them her priority. “The 4 of us forever,” she wrote.

All three girls replied. Scarlet left a heart emoji. Sophia called her mother the family’s rock. Sistine kept it brief: “Strongest woman I know.”

For a family that had spent years posing together on red carpets, the public show of loyalty said a great deal.

A romance that had survived worse

Stallone and Flavin’s relationship had been tested before. They met at a restaurant in West Hollywood in the late 1980s, when he was at the peak of his action-hero fame.

In 1994, Stallone broke off their engagement after coming to believe he had fathered a child with model Janice Dickinson. A DNA test showed he was not the father, and Flavin took him back. They married in May 1997.

It was his third trip down the aisle. He was married to Sasha Czack from 1974 until 1985, then to Danish actress Brigitte Nielsen. That marriage lasted around two years and was picked over relentlessly by the tabloids.

How the Sylvester Stallone divorce fell apart

By mid-September 2022, the signs of a reunion were hard to miss. Stallone posted an Instagram photo of himself holding his wife’s hand, followed by a family picture with all three daughters.

Then came confirmation. His spokesperson said the couple had met up at home, talked things through and worked out their differences. In Palm Beach County, Judge Darren Shull signed an order pausing the case so the pair could settle matters privately.

On 7 October 2022, reports confirmed the couple had filed a voluntary notice of dismissal, formally closing the divorce. From filing to dismissal, the whole case had lasted just seven weeks. Soon afterwards they were seen out together in New York, arm in arm and both wearing their wedding rings.

The reality series mentioned back in August went ahead as planned. The Family Stallone premiered on Paramount+ in May 2023, with Sylvester, Jennifer and all three daughters on screen together, a far cry from the courtroom papers of the summer before.

Stallone later called the whole episode “a very tumultuous time”. As for Dwight the Rottweiler, he stayed. The dog moved in with the family at their home in Hidden Hills, California, and by all reports Flavin has grown fond of him.
