Donald Trump is widely known to have avoided the draft during the Vietnam War. Now, it appears his youngest son, Barron Trump, may also not be heading into the military, which has angered many Americans. Why? Because of a medical exemption.
The war in Iran is in full force. U.S. and Israeli troops have bombed several sites, including the capital, Tehran, and reportedly killed Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, over the weekend.
Meanwhile, Iran has responded, and as of Tuesday, six U.S. service members have been killed. Exact figures regarding deaths on the Iranian side have not been confirmed.
While Donald Trump and his administration have carried out strikes against Iran without congressional approval, many have questioned whether the president, who has not served in the military, knows what he is doing.
Neither Donald nor his children — Donald Jr., Eric, Ivanka, and Tiffany — have served in the military, which leaves Barron Trump as the possible first member of the family to do so.
It is well known that Donald Trump avoided the draft several times. For instance, Dr. Larry Braunstein, a podiatrist in Queens who died about 20 years ago, diagnosed Trump with bone spurs as a favor to his father, Fred, which helped him avoid military service.
In 2016, Trump said a physician “gave me a letter — a very strong letter — on the heels” to submit to draft officials. However, oddly, he could not recall the doctor’s name.
#SendBarron hashtag trending in connection with Iran war
The fact that Donald Trump may have avoided the draft has not gone down well with many Americans, including some military personnel and their families.
Over the weekend, as the war in Iran began, the hashtag #SendBarron began trending.
One user wrote: “Why not show the Trump family’s spirit of patriotism and sacrifice by sending Barron to fight in Iran?”
“At least someone from the Trump family should demonstrate their patriotism by serving instead of profiting,” another added.
Another post read: “#SendBarron would certainly send a message of solidarity with our troops and gratitude for the sacrifices they make every day.”
One user stated: “If you support leaders who promote war, then you or your children should at least be first in line to explain why it’s worth it.”
Some also criticized Trump’s role in escalating the war while remaining safe. One person commented, “POTUS is relaxing at his own country club while starting WWIII #SendBarron.”
Medical reasons Barron Trump ‘can’t join’ the U.S. military
The first men eligible for the draft would be those turning 20 during the lottery year. Since Barron turns 20 in May, he could theoretically be drafted. However, it appears the youngest son of the president may be exempt from military service — but for medical reasons in a way many might not expect.
At 6’7″, Barron could be considered too tall for certain military roles, particularly those requiring confined spaces such as armored vehicles, tanks, and aircraft, according to reports.
The U.S. Army has a height limit for some positions, set at 6’8″, which would technically disqualify Barron from serving.
