Dean Cain’s son is not a little boy anymore. Christopher Dean Cain, 26, stood beside the former Superman star’s hospital bed after Dean had hernia repair surgery, and the photo Dean shared shows a young man with a full reddish-brown beard and mustache.
Cain posted the selfie on Instagram, flashing a shaka sign from the bed and thanking his medical team. He added that his son was “right by my side.” For fans who still picture Christopher as the small boy at red carpet premieres, the change is hard to miss.
The job he said no to
The bedside photo means more once you know what Cain gave up to be there.
Christopher was born on June 11, 2000, to Cain and Samantha Torres. The couple first shared custody. In 2011 they agreed that Dean would take sole custody, so their son could grow up in a single home.
Before then, while he was still in a custody dispute, Cain was offered a television contract he later said could have made him one of the highest-paid actors on TV. The show ran for six years. Taking it would have meant leaving home for four months at a time.
Cain has said the decision took “not even a split second.” He put it plainly: “Who is going to raise my son?”
He has admitted the choice hurt his career more than he can easily explain. He has also said he would never swap what he did as a father for what he might have had as an actor. For years, he picked his projects by one test: whether they let him stay close to Christopher.
Where Dean Cain learned to be a dad
Cain named his son after his own father. Film director Christopher Cain, whose credits include the 1988 Western Young Guns, married Dean’s mother, Sharon Thomas, in 1969. He went on to adopt Dean and his older brother, Roger.
Dean was 4 at the time. He told Fox News that the adoption shaped his life, and that nothing had mattered more than having his father there to raise him.
That history explains a lot. When Cain became a parent himself, being an absent dad was never on the table.
From Metropolis to the school run
For viewers of a certain age on both sides of the Atlantic, Cain will always be Clark Kent. Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman debuted on ABC in 1993, paired him with Teri Hatcher, and ran for four seasons until 1997.
Acting was never the original plan. Cain played college football at Princeton and hoped to go pro until a knee injury ended that dream. Hollywood came next, and the Superman role made him famous.
By 2018, the focus had shifted firmly to home. With Christopher 17 and a half, Cain went on Today with Hoda Kotb and joked that if his son moved away, he would simply move too. Then he conceded that one day he would have to let him go. He called their bond “the greatest thing in the world.”

The years since have been busy for Christopher. He graduated from High Point University in North Carolina in 2023, and his father marked the day with a ceremony photo tagged #ProudDad.
Earlier that year, Dean had posted a selfie with his son under the hashtag #myFavoriteHuman. A month later, he shared a picture of Christopher at a High Point basketball game alongside university president Nido Qubein.
Christopher now appears to be making music. His Instagram links to an Apple Music artist page under the name Christopher Songz, which lists the albums Aer Bourne and Spirit Borne plus a run of singles released across 2025 and 2026.
Dean keeps working as well. Proud American Studios lists him as host of The Homeland, and in September 2026 he was picked to host the Small Business Administration’s Million Dollar Pitch Competition in Washington, D.C., where entrepreneurs compete for a combined $1 million in growth capital.
In April 2025, father and son posed side by side, each holding a certificate with his first name on it. Dean’s caption was “Like father, like son!”
Then came the moment longtime fans had waited for. Nearly 30 years after Lois & Clark went off the air, Cain pulled the Superman suit back on for a photo. The person fastening the cape was Christopher.
