In a school gym in Valdosta, Georgia, a kindergartner walked up to her physical education teacher in the middle of a basketball activity with one request. Could he put her hair in a ponytail? Jonathan Oliver said yes, a colleague pressed record, and the PE teacher ponytail video went on to pass 3 million views.
It happened at WG Nunn Elementary School in early 2019. Oliver, 34 at the time, had no idea anyone was filming.
A quick fix on the gym floor
The student was Kristen Paulk. While the lesson carried on, Oliver dropped down to her height and worked carefully to gather her hair back from her face.
Kandice Anderson, the school’s assistant kindergarten teacher, caught the whole thing on her phone. She shared it on Facebook with a caption saying the job goes beyond teaching, and added the hashtag #CoachO.
Within two weeks, the clip had more than 3 million views. Good Morning America tracked down the people involved and ran the story in February 2019.
Shocked by the attention
Oliver is a father of three. He told GMA the reaction surprised him, because the teachers at his school do this kind of thing constantly. The staff, he explained, want the children to feel at home and to look forward to coming in each day.
“To me, it was just a ponytail,” he said.
He was also honest about his limits. Oliver regularly does his own daughter’s hair, but his skills end at a basic ponytail. If Kristen had asked for anything more elaborate, he joked, he would have sent her to her mom.
A family that already knew the routine
Kristen’s mother, Miyah Cleckley, told GMA the video moved her. She said she has always felt her daughter was in good hands with Oliver.
The scene also looked familiar to her. Cleckley and Kristen’s father have five daughters and a son. When she is at work, he takes over the hair duties at home. Watching another man patiently fixing Kristen’s hair in a school gym was, in her words to GMA, really cute.
Why the PE teacher ponytail video keeps coming back
Most viral classroom clips rely on a stunt, a surprise or a big emotional reveal. This one has none of that. The version GMA shared runs 36 seconds. It shows a grown man concentrating hard on a small, practical task for a 5-year-old who trusted him enough to ask.
That plainness is part of its appeal. Parents who have wrestled a wriggling child into a hair tie before the school run will recognize the look of focus on Oliver’s face.
The story also features two dads doing hair: Oliver with his own daughter, and Kristen’s father at home with five girls. Oliver clearly didn’t think he had done anything unusual, and that seems to be exactly why people keep sharing it.
The clip found a fresh audience in August 2023, when Newsner republished the story more than four years after Anderson first posted it.
