Rachel Ward became a superstar after appearing as Maggie Cleary in The Thorn Birds. As an actress, she has often been judged by her looks, and now she has decided to respond. In a new interview, Ward appeared makeup-free, embracing her maturing features. And we love it!
Rachel Ward’s performance in The Thorn Birds brought her into the center of Hollywood glamour. In later years, Ward stepped back from the spotlight, but she has since become the center of attention for something other than her work.
Appearing makeup-free in a recent interview with ABC News, she opened up about the intense criticism she’s faced over her appearance and why she is choosing to embrace her natural, maturing features in a world that often pressures women to do the opposite.
“I was a catalyst for a conversation that I think people had been challenged by,” she said in a clip later shared on Instagram. “Women weren’t allowed to have wrinkles, weren’t allowed to go gray. Why do we feel we’ve got to pretend that we’re still 40 when we’re 68?”
Her candid honesty didn’t stop there. Reflecting on the unexpected attention her natural look has received online, she added with surprising humor: “The more wretched I looked, the more followers I have… How ironic that my going gray actually garnered me more attention than if I’d taken my top off.”
Rachel Ward shuts down online trolls after backlash over natural aging stance
While her authenticity has earned her many supporters, it has also brought a wave of online criticism. After she shared a video about her new venture, FarmThru — a shift from her former life in the spotlight to a quieter life on a farm — she said she was met with a flood of comments targeting her appearance rather than her work.
In a follow-up Instagram video, she addressed the backlash directly with her signature bluntness and calm confidence.
“Dear those of you who responded to the brouhaha over the trolls criticizing my appearance, I have tried to do a little better today. I ran my hands through my hair, etc.,” she said. “But anyway, just to say, do not fear aging.”
Her message is clear: growing older isn’t something to hide — it’s something to accept. And for her, every wrinkle and gray strand is part of a story she refuses to erase.
