Former President Barack Obama and former First Lady Michelle Obama have often been viewed as the complete opposite of Donald and Melania Trump. Now, the former first lady has broken her silence on MAGA supporters, sharing a blunt verdict about the future.
Former President Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama completed their eight years in the White House long ago. Yet despite leaving office years ago, they have remained in the spotlight, largely due to Donald Trump.
Just a few months ago, they were once again making headlines after President Trump shared an offensive video that included a clip depicting Obama and Michelle as apes. The post drew widespread criticism from both sides of the political aisle.
In early May, Barack Obama — or “Barack Hussein Obama,” as Trump continues to call him — finally addressed the disturbing video.
Donald Trump’s attack on Barack Obama
Speaking with The New Yorker, the former president said he didn’t necessarily view it as a personal attack. However, he felt differently when it came to his family.
“I don’t take it personally. I mean, I’m always offended when my wife and kids get dragged into things, because they didn’t choose this… That’s a line that even people whose politics I deeply reject, I would expect them to care about. I would never talk about somebody’s family in that way,” Barack Obama said.
He went on to express concern about Trump sharing AI-generated videos. He also argued that the Trump administration has treated war “like a video game” and shows “excrement dumped on ordinary citizens.”
“I mean, I’m a fair target in the sense of, yeah, you can feel free to pick on me, because I’m your own size,” Obama added.
Through the many controversies involving Trump and his MAGA supporters, Michelle Obama had largely remained silent. However, during an appearance on the Talk Easy With Sam Fragoso podcast, she finally spoke out.
Former First Lady Michelle Obama shares blunt verdict on MAGA supporters
The former first lady argued that the Make America Great Again movement should not be used to generalize the entire MAGA supporter base.
Michelle said she was “deeply, deeply disappointed” by the 2024 election results, but suggested the outcome “had as much to do with people’s pain and confusion about where they are in their lives.”
“Many of the people who voted for my husband twice,” Michelle Obama continued. “And I know that that’s how they feel. It’s like, this isn’t about anything other than just, we need something different.”
She added that people should be careful about making blanket assumptions.
“You can’t just pigeonhole them and say ‘you just don’t care’ and ‘you’re racist’ or whatever you’re thinking,” she explained. “This is an act of ‘I don’t know what else to do’.”
As financial concerns can have a major influence on how people vote and where they fall politically, Michelle Obama said that when people “don’t have a chance,” it “makes you angry and it makes you susceptible to find someone to blame.”
“They’re good people”
The former first lady added that future political leaders must prioritize the middle and working classes.
“It’s not me anymore, but I know those folks, and they’re good people, and they don’t have a way out, and that makes for bad choices,” Michelle Obama said on the Talk Easy With Sam Fragoso podcast.
