Hollywood is grieving the loss of beloved actor Michael Pennington, who has died at the age of 82. His representatives confirmed the news, as tributes continue to pour in.
The British performer was widely recognized by film audiences for his role as Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, the Imperial officer overseeing construction of the second Death Star.
Born in Cambridge, England, on June 7, 1943, Pennington became one of Britain’s most respected Shakespearean actors. In 1986, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company alongside director Michael Bogdanov, dedicating much of his life to theatre and literature.
News of his passing was confirmed on Sunday, with tributes quickly arriving from fans and fellow actors worldwide. Actress Miriam Margolyes honored him as a “very fine actor—brilliant, wise, and clear.” Speaking to the BBC, she also called him “an old friend from Cambridge University days,” adding that she was “deeply saddened” by the loss.
Though many knew him from Star Wars, Pennington enjoyed a long and distinguished career on stage and screen. His film credits included Hamlet and The Iron Lady, where he portrayed British politician Michael Foot.
He was also known for working with Judi Dench and her husband Michael Williams in several stage productions, including King Lear.
Pennington once shared that seeing Dench perform Ophelia in a 1957 production of Hamlet inspired him to pursue acting. “There’s no one quite like Judi,” he said, praising her unique approach to performance.
Despite gaining global recognition through Star Wars, he admitted he was often surprised by how much attention the role continued to bring, recalling how fans frequently approached him about it after theatre performances.
His final credited role came in 2022, when he voiced The Trust in the sci-fi series Raised by Wolves. He is survived by his son, Mark.
Rest in peace, Michael Pennington.
