Madeleine McCann’s disappearance remains one of the world’s most haunting unsolved cases — and a controversial new documentary released last week has reignited global interest.
While her parents have not publicly responded to the latest findings, Kate McCann has previously spoken about a heartbreaking regret that still weighs heavily on her today.
Her biggest regret
The mystery surrounding Madeleine McCann’s disappearance has once again made headlines following the release of a disturbing new documentary. The Unseen Evidence, a joint investigation by Channel 4 and The Sun, has shocked viewers with never-before-seen details linked to prime suspect Christian Brueckner.
The film reveals chilling evidence from a 2016 raid on Brueckner’s remote German property — including 75 children’s swimsuits, toys, and a hard drive containing explicit material. Most disturbingly, six USB sticks and two memory cards were discovered buried beneath his dog’s corpse.
As the world reacts to these revelations, Madeleine’s parents remain silent — but Kate McCann’s past confession about her biggest regret continues to resurface.
Madeleine McCann’s disappearance in 2007 was, in many ways, every parent’s worst nightmare. The McCann family had planned a relaxing holiday in Praia da Luz, Portugal — but what happened inside their apartment continues to puzzle police, the public, and Madeleine’s loved ones.

That night, Kate and Gerry McCann left Madeleine and her younger twin siblings, Sean and Amelie, sleeping in the apartment while they dined with friends at a nearby tapas restaurant. Around 10 p.m., Kate returned to check on the children — only to discover Madeleine was gone.
She found the bedroom door wide open, and as she tried to close it, it slammed shut, revealing the window and shutter were ajar. Madeleine’s blanket and Cuddle Cat were still on the bed — but she had disappeared.
In shock, Kate ran back to the restaurant shouting, “Madeleine’s gone! Someone’s taken her!”
Around 60 staff and guests joined a frantic overnight search, hoping she had simply wandered off. But as dawn broke, that hope faded — and nearly 18 years later, she has never been found.
The restaurant note
In the aftermath of Madeleine’s disappearance, one detail has haunted Kate McCann more than any other — a seemingly innocent restaurant note that later became a source of deep regret.
In her 2011 memoir Madeleine: Our Daughter’s Disappearance and the Continuing Search for Her, Kate reflected on the moment she says she will carry with her “until the end of [her] days.”
On the night Madeleine vanished, the McCanns had requested a specific table at the Ocean Club restaurant — one with a view of their apartment, where their children were sleeping. Their plan was to dine nearby while checking on them regularly.
However, staff recorded their request in writing, along with the reason for it. That note, meant simply to explain their preference, later became a painful burden.

“To my horror,” Kate wrote, “I saw that, no doubt in all innocence and simply to explain why she was bending the rules a bit, the receptionist had added the reason for our request: we wanted to eat close to our apartments as we were leaving our young children alone there and checking on them intermittently.”
The message, reportedly written in a pool reception logbook, noted the group’s plan to dine at 8:30 p.m. while their children slept alone nearby.
Kate has since feared that the detail may have been seen by the abductor.
“We now bitterly regret it and will do so until the end of our days,” she wrote.
Latest message
Nearly two decades on, Madeleine McCann’s disappearance remains unsolved, and the pain is still deeply felt by Kate and Gerry McCann.
While they have not commented on the new documentary The Unseen Evidence, they released a statement just days before its airing, marking 18 years since Madeleine went missing.
“As we arrive at the 18th anniversary of Madeleine’s abduction, we’d like to thank our faithful supporters once again for standing by us and never forgetting about Madeleine,” they wrote on May 3.

They added that despite the years passing, their determination remains unchanged: “Whilst we have no significant news to share, our determination to ‘leave no stone unturned’ is unwavering. We will do our utmost to achieve this.”
They also noted that May not only marks the anniversary of Madeleine’s disappearance, but also her birthday — she would have turned 22 this year.
“No matter how near or far she is, she continues to be right here with us, every day, but especially on her special day,” they wrote. “We continue to ‘celebrate’ her as the very beautiful and unique person she is. We miss her.”
