There are few actors more iconic than Chuck Norris, especially when it comes to stunts, martial arts, and all-around action films.
Sadly, the 86-year-old Oklahoma native passed away on March 19, 2026.
Let’s take a closer look at Chuck Norris’ career and the legacy that shaped generations of fans. Chuck Norris was born on March 10, 1940, in Ryan, Oklahoma.

The oldest of three boys, he once described himself as “the shy kid who never excelled at anything in school.”
Chuck Norris – early life
In reality, Norris’ childhood was quite difficult. His father struggled with heavy drinking, and when Chuck was just 10 years old, he disappeared, leaving his mother, Wilma, to raise the family on her own.
She single-handedly raised Chuck and his two brothers, and by the time he turned 15, the family had moved 16 times before eventually settling in California.
Wilma was a devoted Christian and made sure Chuck and his brothers — Wieland and Arron — attended church wherever they lived. As a result, Norris developed a strong relationship with God.
Chuck attended North Torrance High School, and by age 14, he had already taken on more responsibility at home. Alongside his studies, he helped care for his brothers while his mother worked.
“God has a plan for you,” Wilma would tell him daily.
“She loves Jesus with all of her heart and soul and made sure we understood that growing up,” Norris said, as reported by Baptist Press. “She influenced me spiritually and instilled in me a sense of responsibility that carried into my adult life. She always told me, ‘God has plans for you,’ and I didn’t know what she meant at the time — but I think I do now.”
In 1958, Chuck married his high school sweetheart, Dianne Holechek.

Around the same time, he developed an interest in the military and joined the United States Air Force the same year he got married.
How Chuck Norris got his name
Chuck was first stationed at Osan Air Base in South Korea, where he began studying martial arts.
As it turned out, it was during his time in service that he got his now-famous name.
During boot camp at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, Texas, a fellow trainee asked him if he knew what “Carlos” meant in English.
“I said, ‘Yeah, it is Charles,’” Norris recalled. “Then he said, ‘The nickname for Charles is Chuck. That’s what I’m going to call you.’ And everyone started calling me Chuck — and it stuck.”
According to the U.S. Army, Norris realized he couldn’t control situations without using force, which led him to study martial arts under Grand Master Mun at the Osan Gym.
After leaving the service in 1961, Chuck worked as a karate instructor. By then, he held a black belt in karate and a brown belt in judo.
He went on to open more than 30 karate studios across the United States in the 1960s, teaching celebrities like Priscilla Presley and Steve McQueen.

Norris also competed in numerous tournaments, winning the World Middleweight Karate Championship in 1968 and defending the title five times, earning recognition as one of the greatest martial artists of his time.
“I was competing against guys with years and years of experience,” he said.
In 1974, he retired from competition, though his chain of karate schools had collapsed by then.
“I thought 500 schools would be better than owning six — turns out it wasn’t. Two years later, I lost everything. It took me five years to recover and pay back my debts,” he explained.
During this period, Steve McQueen encouraged him to try acting. Although he struggled at first due to lack of experience, Norris eventually wrote his own screenplay and launched his film career in 1977 through determination and faith.

Before that, he gained attention in the 1972 film The Way of the Dragon, starring alongside Bruce Lee, with their famous fight scene filmed at the Colosseum in Rome.
Chuck Norris – film career & net worth
Although he never won Academy Awards, Norris built an impressive acting career, appearing in around 40 films, including Missing in Action, Code of Silence, and The Delta Force.
By the 1990s, his acting career slowed, leading him to create new projects. Today, his net worth is estimated at around $70 million.

Norris also supported several charities, including the Make-A-Wish Foundation. In 1990, with help from George H. W. Bush, he founded Kickstart, a program teaching martial arts to middle-school students to build confidence and character.
Chuck Norris – family, wife, children
As mentioned, Chuck married Dianne Holechek in 1958, and they had two children, Mike and Eric, before divorcing in 1988.
In 1997, while dining in Dallas, he met Gena O’Kelley. They married in 1998 and remained deeply in love until his passing in 2026.

Together, they had two children, Danielle and Dakota.
Gave up his film career to care for his ill wife
About a decade ago, their lives changed dramatically. In 2013, Gena received an injection, and in 2017, the couple revealed the serious medical complications that followed MRI scans involving a contrast agent.
According to Gena, symptoms appeared almost immediately.
“Within hours, I felt like my whole body was on fire… I was bedridden for months and needed constant care. Chuck slept beside me and never left. I prayed I would live to raise my children,” she said.
Since then, she has suffered from nerve pain and kidney problems, which they believe were caused by the injected substance.
The couple filed a lawsuit against multiple healthcare companies and have spent around $2 million on treatment.

“I’ve given up my film career to focus on Gena. My whole life now is about keeping her alive,” Chuck said. “This issue is incredibly important.”
“It’s heartbreaking,” Gena added. “It’s a hidden problem we’re determined to bring to light.”
