Kelsey Grammer spent two decades making audiences laugh as Dr. Frasier Crane. But the Kelsey Grammer tragedy that most fans never saw began when he was 12, and by the age of 25 he had lost his grandfather, his father, his younger sister and two half-brothers.
Now 71, sober for 30 years and a father of eight, Grammer has talked about that grief in unusual detail. He has discussed it in interviews with Vanity Fair, People and Fox News Digital, and in letters to a Colorado parole board.
The grief behind Frasier Crane
Grammer was born in 1955 in St. Thomas, in the US Virgin Islands. His parents split up when he was small. His father stayed on the islands, and Kelsey grew up in New Jersey with his mother and her parents.
His grandfather, Gordon, became the most important man in his life. When Kelsey was 12, Gordon died of cancer, an illness likely connected to years of heavy drinking. In his final months the old man had less patience for the boy. Grammer said in 1999 that this was when he first started believing something was wrong with him.
A year later, a stranger shot and killed his father outside his home. The gunman was found not guilty by reason of insanity. For a 13-year-old, the verdict brought no justice and no answers.
Karen, and a crime he never stopped fighting
The worst was still to come. In 1975, Grammer was 20 and training as an actor at Juilliard in New York when his sister Karen, 18, was abducted by four men in Colorado Springs. They raped and murdered her.
Freddie Glenn was convicted of killing Karen and two other people. He received a death sentence, but it was later overturned.
Grammer told Vanity Fair in 2015 that he blamed himself for his sister’s death. He knew the guilt made no rational sense, he said, but it came anyway, and he had met many people who carried the same weight after losing a sibling.
He never let the case go quiet. In 2009, he wrote to the parole board to oppose Glenn’s release. He described himself as the big brother who was supposed to protect her and couldn’t. “I miss her in my bones,” he wrote.
Five years later, in 2014, he faced Glenn over a video link. Grammer told him he accepted his apology and forgave him. He also said he would not back his release, because doing so would betray Karen’s life.
In 1980, the family was hit again. His half-brothers, Billy and Stephen, went scuba diving together. When Billy didn’t come back up, Stephen dove down to look for him and died of an air embolism. Billy’s body was never found.
Drinking, faith and 30 years sober
His career took off during those years. Grammer made his Broadway debut in 1981 as Lennox in Macbeth. In 1984 he joined Cheers as the pompous psychiatrist Frasier Crane, a part meant to be temporary.
The character got his own show, Frasier, which ran for 11 seasons on NBC from 1993 to 2004. The role won Grammer four Emmy Awards, part of a career total of six. He came back to it in 2023 for a revival on Paramount+.
Off camera, the 1990s were difficult. Grammer has linked his well-publicized struggles with drink and drugs in that decade to grief. He said he kept drinking to dull the pain, and that it was a time when he still couldn’t forgive himself for Karen.
He has said he turned away from God during those years. Speaking to Fox News Digital, he said he would now urge people in the same situation to turn toward faith instead. He added that it can feel as though God is out to get you, even though that isn’t true.
He has been sober since 1996. He now describes loss as something everyone faces, and says he simply received a heavier share of it than most. He has also admitted to a deep fear of abandonment, saying that everyone he has loved has left him.
A London flight and a second start
Grammer met his wife, Kayte Walsh, on a flight to London, where she was working as a flight attendant. Walsh, who is English, is the daughter of former footballer Alan Walsh. They married at The Plaza Hotel in New York on February 25, 2011, only weeks after Grammer’s third marriage ended.
Walsh is 25 years younger than he is. Grammer has said she softened a heart that had become hardened against a lot of things, and that she makes him feel young again.
The couple had their fourth child together in 2025, which brought Grammer’s total to eight. He has four children from earlier marriages and relationships. He told People that he neglected some of them, especially his two eldest, and that he is trying to make up for it while he still can.
Several of them work in his field. His daughters Spencer and Greer are actors, and his sons Mason and Jude have studied film production. He became a grandfather in 2011, when Spencer had a son, Emmett.
Karen’s murder still comes up at home. Grammer has said his children sometimes tell him they want to kill Freddie Glenn. His answer is that he understands the feeling and respects them for it, but they will want more out of life than revenge.
