Gina Carano reportedly suspended from MMA after losing in 15 seconds to Ronda Rousey

Gina Carano’s MMA comeback came to a sudden end after Ronda Rousey submitted her in just 15 seconds, with the fighter later receiving an automatic suspension from competition.

Fans packed into California’s Intuit Dome on May 16 to watch two of the most recognizable names in women’s mixed martial arts step back into the cage for a comeback fight more than a decade in the making.

The event, broadcast live on Netflix on May 16, carried a strong sense of nostalgia for longtime MMA fans who followed the sport during the late 2000s and early 2010s.

But the highly anticipated return barely lasted long enough for the crowd to process what had happened.

‘Exactly what I needed’

Ronda Rousey, 39, submitted Gina Carano, 44, with her trademark armbar just 15 seconds into the fight, ending the matchup almost immediately after it began. The victory added another quick finish to Rousey’s career legacy, while also bringing Carano’s first fight since 2009 to an abrupt end.

In an interview with the media after the fight, Ronda Rousey said it was the “closure” she needed. “It’s completely just changed my relationship with the sport,” she said, according to USA Today. “It’s just lifted a weight off me that I didn’t realize I was still carrying in a way. And yeah, it’s like this is exactly what I needed. And that was closure.”

Elevated women’s MMA

Despite the quick ending, the matchup generated enormous attention because both women helped elevate women’s MMA into the mainstream during different eras of the sport.

Gina Carano, who appeared in films like Deadpool and Fast and Furious 6, became one of the first female fighters to achieve crossover celebrity status, while Ronda Rousey, a former Olympian, later turned into one of the UFC’s biggest global stars after capturing the promotion’s first women’s championship.

Although many fans immediately started wondering whether the fight could lead to another comeback, that possibility now appears unlikely.

Suspensions

Following the brief bout, Gina Carano was suspended from MMA competition, though the decision was not connected to misconduct or disciplinary action.

Instead, the suspension is part of standard medical protocol regularly enforced after combat sports events.

Because fighters absorb physical punishment during both training camps and live competition, athletic commissions often require mandatory recovery periods after fights to protect athletes from returning too quickly. Injuries in MMA can include concussions, broken bones, eye damage, and other forms of trauma that are not always immediately visible.

Ronda Rousey — who USA Today reports was fighting with a sprained ankle — also received a suspension following the fight under the same post-event medical procedures.

The length of a suspension can vary significantly depending on a fighter’s condition after competing, along with recommendations from ringside physicians overseeing the event. Some athletes may only be suspended for a short period, while others can remain sidelined for months pending medical scans or doctor approval.

According to MMA AILM, suspensions in MMA can range anywhere from several days to 180 days depending on injuries and recovery requirements.

‘I wanted to hit her’

Even after dominating the fight in just seconds, Ronda Rousey made it clear she had no interest in extending the action any longer than necessary.

“I was hoping to come out as unscathed as possible,” she said after the fight, per ESPN. “I didn’t really want to hurt her. It was beautiful martial arts, that’s what I think that was. It was art.”

When asked whether she wished the fight had lasted longer, she immediately shut down the idea.

“Hell no,” she said. “My husband and my kids are watching me. I don’t want to put them through anything more than I have to.”

She added, “Now I can move on and know that this is the right time, and I’m just so ready for what’s next.”

Gina Carano, meanwhile, remained upbeat despite the quick defeat and admitted she had hoped the fight would continue longer after feeling confident heading into the cage.

“I wanted that to last longer,” she said.

“I felt so ready. I’ve never felt that good. But I haven’t been here for 17 years…and I wanted to hit her.”
