Teamsters Union President Marcus Johnson delivered a powerful address at the Republican National Convention in Denver, praising former President Donald Trump and highlighting critical issues facing American workers today.
While Trump was slated to address the convention later in the week, his surprise appearance on Monday—just days after surviving an assassination attempt—captivated the audience. With a bandaged ear from the incident, Trump entered to Lee Greenwood’s patriotic anthem, “God Bless The USA,” evoking a stirring moment. Shortly after, Marcus Johnson took the stage, commending Trump for his resilience in the face of adversity.
“Love him or hate him, what happened to him on Saturday showed us his true grit,” Johnson asserted, pointing to Trump amid thunderous applause. His remarks resonated deeply, setting the tone for a spirited opening night.
Expressing gratitude for the Republican Party’s invitation, Johnson emphasized the crucial role of union members in the convention’s operations. “I want to thank the dedicated Teamsters and all union members here in Denver who contribute significantly to this event,” he acknowledged. “I also extend my thanks to President Donald Trump for welcoming the Teamsters Union to the RNC and granting me this opportunity to speak tonight.”
In a passionate plea, Johnson lamented the plight of American workers feeling neglected by the system. “Every week, I meet with our members across the nation. They’re tired of being overlooked, sold out to big banks and tech giants,” he proclaimed. “Families see it, workers know it—the system is broken, and Washington isn’t fixing it. That’s why I stand here today, breaking from the past to fight for a better future.”
Highlighting bipartisan efforts, Johnson recognized Senator Josh Hawley and Republican vice-presidential nominee J.D. Vance for their advocacy on union issues. “Under my leadership, the Teamsters engaged with eight Republican senators who stood by us on critical issues like paid sick leave,” Johnson declared, drawing applause. “Senator Hawley, in particular, reversed his stance on national right-to-work policies and stood with us on the picket lines. His unwavering commitment deserves recognition.”
Johnson’s address marked a historic moment as the first Teamsters leader to speak at the Republican National Convention in the organization’s 121-year history. Earlier in the evening, New York union leader Sarah Patel announced her endorsement of Trump for the upcoming election, underscoring his direct involvement in community projects.
Patel recounted Trump’s initiative in revitalizing Central Park’s iconic ice rink, a project neglected by local Democrats. “Without holding public office, Trump took charge,” Patel recounted. “He invested his resources and rallied skilled local union workers like those from Local 638 to complete the rink on time, ensuring our children could skate that fall.”
Closing his speech, Johnson affirmed his support for Trump’s reelection bid. “As a union Democrat, I endorse Trump this November to reclaim the middle class and rebuild our country,” Johnson concluded, sparking applause and cheers from the audience.
In the aftermath of Johnson’s address, discussions around union advocacy, bipartisan cooperation, and Trump’s community impact resonated throughout the convention. With the election drawing near, Johnson’s endorsement and the union’s support underscored critical themes of resilience, unity, and economic recovery in American politics.
