Sophie was an ordinary and vibrant toddler, full of life and energy, until a fateful day in May 2017.
When her health began to decline, her parents, Shelby and Jonathan, initially believed their little girl was dealing with a bout of allergies.
She seemed to be having trouble catching her breath, leading her doctor to consider the possibility of asthma. However, it quickly became apparent that the reality was far more serious than anyone anticipated.
An allergy test was set for a few days later, but Sophie never made it to that appointment.
One night, she suddenly ceased to breathe.
Every parent’s worst fear unfolded before Shelby and Jonathan as they hurried to summon emergency help. Within moments, they found themselves en route to the hospital, hearts racing with anxiety.
It was only upon arrival that the medical team revealed the unsettling truth: Sophie was grappling with a far more serious condition than asthma and allergies.
Medical professionals identified a mass the size of a grapefruit in young Sophie’s chest. It turned out she had developed T-cell lymphoma, a serious condition. This diagnosis plunged the little girl into a battle for her well-being.
Unfortunately, intense chemotherapy was ineffective in halting the progression of her illness. The side effects of the treatments severely impacted Sophie’s mobility, speech, dexterity, and ability to eat.
While Sophie bravely confronted her challenges, her parents devoted endless hours to supporting their daughter during her hospital stay.
Shelby remained ever vigilant beside her daughter, Sophie, her focus solely on her well-being and the care she received. Sophie’s frail condition made her in need of a stem cell transplant.
Amidst the turmoil surrounding them, Shelby observed a dedicated nurse who seemed to strive for anonymity in her efforts. Yet, Shelby’s watchful eye did not miss a single moment of her diligence.
After capturing a candid moment while the caregiver was momentarily distracted, Shelby shared the image on the Facebook page set up by the parents to chronicle Sophie’s journey through her health struggles.
“I See You,” Shelby expressed as she opened up about her observations during her daughter’s treatment.
Mom Shelby shares:
“I See You. I Spend Hours Here on This Couch, And I See You. You Do Your Best to Remain Under the Radar with Me and My Child.
I Notice Your Expression Shift Slightly When She Sees You and Starts to Cry. I See the Efforts You Make to Alleviate Her Fears and Gain Her Trust. I Watch You Pause Before You Need to Stick Her or Remove Bandages. You Say ‘No Hurt’ and ‘I’m Sorry’ More Times in a Single Day Than Most People Say ‘Thank You.’
“I notice the vibrant bands adorning your wrists and draped over your stethoscope, each representing a young life you’ve touched and cherished.
I watch as you gently caress the small, smooth head of a little one, ensuring her blankets are snug around her. I see you offering comfort to a mother overwhelmed with sorrow, providing solace in her time of need. I observe you multitasking, skillfully documenting details on your computer while cradling an infant whose caregiver is unable to be by her side.”
For 12 hours, you set aside your own concerns to provide care for children who are gravely ill. You enter each room with a warm smile, no matter the circumstances inside. When you see Sophie’s name on the schedule, you take the time to check on us, even if she isn’t under your care.
You tirelessly reach out to doctors, the blood bank, and the pharmacy, making as many calls as needed to ensure my child receives the necessary care without delay. You check in on me just as frequently as you do on her. You patiently listen as I share my thoughts for 10 minutes, even when your phone is buzzing and your to-do list seems endless.
“Your Presence Is A Beacon Of Hope. We All Acknowledge The Impact You Make. No Gesture Can Truly Capture The Depth Of Our Gratitude. You Are Our Guiding Light Each Day. Without Your Support, Our Children Would Lack Essential Care. Parents Like Me Would Struggle To Find Peace And Understanding Without Your Compassion. You Are The Guardians Of Our Little Ones, And Your Dedication Is Irreplaceable.”
Shelby’s heartfelt note resonated not only with the nurses it was intended for but also with other parents who recognized the crucial role these nurses play in the pediatric unit.
The challenges faced by these nurses are beyond comprehension, as they endure the most trying moments in a parent’s journey, day in and day out.
