On June 27, Amazon titan Jeff Bezos married former TV anchor Lauren Sánchez in a spectacle that turned Venice into a billionaire’s playground. But while the couple shouted status with every shimmering moment, the internet has been buzzing over one glaring detail…
Dubbed “the wedding of the century,” Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez pulled out all the stops in a jaw-dropping three-day wedding celebration that redefined billionaire luxury.
Around 200 handpicked guests jetted into Venice, a historic Italian city with crumbling palazzos and gondola-filled canals that transformed into a gilded playground for the elite.
The high-profile attendees were there to witness the Amazon founder, and his fiancée of two years, say “I do” at a ceremony that cost about $56 million, according to Reuters.

People reports that the festivities kicked off with a celebrity tidal wave. Kim Kardashian touched down with Khloe and Kris Jenner in tow, while Oprah Winfrey glided into the city on a Venetian water taxi alongside NFL legend Tom Brady. Bill Gates made a rare public appearance, and Kendall and Kylie Jenner brought full runway energy to the affair.
Meanwhile, Ivanka Trump and Jared Kushner were already soaking in la dolce vita – or the sweet life.
“Ready to celebrate the love story of our friends,” President Donald Trump’s daughter posted on Facebook, sharing a snap of her lavish hotel suite – its nameplate reading “Dolce Vita.”
The president was notably absent.
‘Online backlash’ and ‘Fake friendships’
But behind the designer gowns and celebrity cameos, a digital uproar erupted and social media caught fire – not with admiration but with condemnation.
The billionaire guest list sparked instant backlash, with critics slamming the Bezos-Sánchez wedding as a high-society showcase rather than a celebration of true love.
Social media users weren’t buying the glitz, accusing the couple – especially the world’s third-richest man – of hosting a wedding with “no real friends,” but with carefully curated celebrities to flex their elite status.
“Fake display of…fake celebrity, fake humility, and fake friendships… all of it. It’s so off-putting,” Megyn Kelly said on her podcast.
“None of them are friends, it is all fake…let see how long they remain married,” tweets a netizen in the comment’s section of Kelly’s post.
A second user chimed in, “I love how Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez have no real friends. Like why are you inviting Sydney Sweeney and Ellie Goulding to your 200-person wedding?”
‘Is Oprah friends with Jeff?’
And then Rosie O’Donnell took the torch and calling out Oprah, she threw gasoline on the fire.
In a scathing Instagram post, the 63-year-old comedian wrote of the wedding and the guests: “It turned my stomach seeing all these billionaires gathering in the gross excess of it all. The show of it. Is Oprah friends with Jeff [Bezos?] Really – how is that possible?”
But it didn’t stop there. O’Donnell’s criticism sliced deeper.
“…By any metric he is not a nice man…He treats his employees with disdain… And his fake fembot wife who looks like that?” she continued in the blistering post alongside a before and after photo of Bezos new bride. “…Sold his soul is what it looks like from here. The devil is smiling at all his conquests.”
Online users jumped in the comments section, applauding her message.

“How they all literally basked in being seen at this event. Like it was a sign of their status,” shares one online user. A second writes, “Proof that money comes first, always. It’s the tie that binds…and buys friends.”
‘Why not?’
But not everyone slammed the elaborate celebration or Bezos allegedly “fake friendships.” “If I had even a fraction of the money they have, I too would be inviting random celebs to my wedding lol. Sending an invite to Beyoncé & Dakota Johnson? Why not?” shares one user.
Another adds, “I think you’re also forgetting that they see these people go to high ticket national and international fundraisers, balls, and galas. They do genuinely see these people a lot,” they said.
For all its sparkle, the Bezos-Sánchez wedding has become more of a spectacle than a celebration – because in the age of scrutiny, even fairy tales come with a comments section.
