On September 3, 2018, Officer Cooper and a sergeant responded to a report of shoplifting at a local retail store. While apprehending two individuals in the parking lot, a third suspect fled the scene. The two officers split up to pursue the escapee. The sergeant later reported hearing two gunshots and discovered Officer Cooper had been injured.
