Shelter Staff Discovers Cats Offering Massages to Blind Dog in Need

At Sunshine Animal Refuge Agadir (SARA), a haven nestled amidst the serene landscapes of Morocco, Tam stands out as a gentle soul in need of special care. Blind from birth and afflicted with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, a condition that renders his skin fragile and his joints prone to arthritis, Tam’s journey at SARA is a testament to resilience and the power of compassion.

Tam’s story is intertwined with that of Elodie, a devoted feline companion, and a tribe of cats at SARA who seem to instinctively understand his needs. According to Hazel Skeet, a dedicated volunteer at SARA, Tam often finds solace sharing his bed with at least two cats, who shower him with affectionate cuddles and soothing massages. “All the cats adore him,” says Skeet, “and they know he will lie quietly and be gentle with them. He’s the perfect pillow for a snooze, and Tam enjoys the affectionate closeness.”

The Farm Refuge at SARA, one of three refuges in the network, serves as a sanctuary not only for senior and ailing dogs like Tam but also for over 200 homeless cats. Skeet fondly recalls the ambiance at the refuge, where the presence of cats is ubiquitous. “It’s quite difficult for anyone to sit down at the Farm Refuge without being immediately surrounded by cats,” she shares, highlighting Tam’s popularity among the feline residents.

Born nearly nine years ago at the refuge, Tam and his sister Daccia have remained under SARA’s care due to their ongoing health challenges. While most of their siblings found homes, Tam and Daccia, both diagnosed with Ehlers-Danlos syndrome, have found comfort and stability amidst their cat and human companions. Skeet emphasizes the dedication of volunteers and staff who ensure that Tam and Daccia receive the specialized care they need to thrive.

Tam’s closest bond, apart from the feline tribe, is with his sister Daccia. They start and end their days together, engaging in playful interactions that reflect their deep friendship. “They are very close friends,” Skeet notes affectionately, highlighting the duo’s companionship within the sanctuary’s serene environment.

Despite his challenges, Tam leads a serene life at SARA’s Farm Refuge, where he spends his days basking in the warmth of the sun or finding solace in the cool shade. Occasionally, Tam interacts with younger puppies, tolerating their playful antics, but he predominantly prefers the quiet company of his cat friends. “Because he is blind,” explains Skeet, “Tam is naturally cautious around strangers. It takes time to earn his trust, but once you do, he’s incredibly affectionate and cuddly.”

Skeet considers it a privilege to be recognized by Tam, who greets her with enthusiasm upon her arrival at the refuge, responding to her familiar voice and scent. It’s moments like these that underscore the deep bonds forged between animals and their caregivers at SARA, where every interaction is rooted in trust, respect, and unconditional love.

Looking ahead, Tam’s future at SARA’s Farm Refuge is filled with the promise of continued comfort and companionship. Surrounded by his sister and cherished cat friends, he will receive ongoing care and the nurturing support that define life at the refuge. As he enjoys the gentle massages and affectionate gestures from his feline companions, Tam embodies the tranquility and fulfillment that come from being truly understood and cherished in a sanctuary dedicated to their well-being.
