Long before she became a mother determined to shield her children from fame, Melissa Sue Anderson was the girl millions of Americans grew up watching every week. Born September 26, 1962, in Berkeley, California, she landed the role of Mary Ingalls on “Little House on the Prairie” as a child and stayed with the show from 1974 to 1981, eventually earning an Emmy nomination for her work on the storyline where Mary goes blind.
Working alongside Michael Landon shaped more than just her acting career. Anderson has said she often sought him out for advice even as an adult, telling Hollywood Chicago in a June 2010 interview, “Over the years, even as an adult, I went for advice from him. I think I reminded him of himself when he started out. We both wanted to learn so much.” But watching how fame affected Landon’s own family left a lasting impression on her — one she didn’t want to repeat.
She recalled seeing him get pulled away from his daughter’s birthday party to sign autographs, and it stuck with her. “I didn’t want my kids to grow up around a parent who’s being stopped and asked for photographs all the time. They’ve been able to grow up being the stars of the household,” she said.
Anderson married producer Michael Sloan in 1990. The couple welcomed daughter Piper in February 1991 and son Griffin in June 1996. Once she became a mother, Anderson stepped back from acting almost entirely, taking only occasional roles for friends. She eventually relocated with her family to Canada, embracing a quieter life away from paparazzi and public attention. Reflecting on that period, she said, “It’s nice just being a regular person. It’s good to get to know what I’m like without the acting.”
Now in her sixties, with both children grown, Anderson looks back on that choice without regret — trading Hollywood recognition for a family life built on her own terms.
