If you’re one of those people who absolutely loves teasing and challenging their brain with optical illusions, then I salute you.
I, on the other hand, am hopeless at them. When I was six, my grandma gave me a “train your brain” book for my birthday. Needless to say, it didn’t leave the bookshelf until I was almost 16. Even then, I couldn’t wrap my head around half of the puzzles hidden within its pages.
And yet, I know brain teasers and illusions are incredibly popular online. People everywhere enjoy testing their skills by deciphering pictures and finding hidden details that are quite literally right in front of their eyes.
With that in mind, I thought it would be fun to share one I stumbled upon recently. Lo and behold, it has me completely stumped when it comes to getting a high score — though I can admit I hardly have the sharpest eyes in the human population. In the brainteaser below, readers are challenged to count the faces in the “National Leaders Tree” …
It’s unclear where the image originally surfaced, but it’s gaining traction online as people try to outdo one another in spotting as many faces as possible.
Of course, everyone can see the two faces at the bottom of the tree, but the real fun begins when you start searching for the rest.
Apparently, the number of faces you find is said to reveal something about your memory.
We know… there are far more “academic” ways to measure your abilities, but if you’re up for it, jot down how many faces you spot. When you’re done, scroll down to see what your number is said to mean.
2 to 4 faces As mentioned, the two faces at the bottom are obvious. If you can only find one or two more, the puzzle suggests it may point to memory difficulties.
5 to 6 faces If you’ve found more than four, good job. Keep searching — but if you stop at five or six, the puzzle claims it could indicate a higher risk of memory‑related conditions.
7 to 8 faces Your memory is considered perfectly acceptable, though not exceptional. You can keep training your brain with puzzles like this!
More than 9 faces Congratulations — if you spotted nine or more, the puzzle says you have excellent memory and facial‑recognition skills.
